Temporary Dreadlock Extensions

How long can I wear them?

Temporary Dreadlock Extensions can be worn for approximately 2 months. This is because you lose 80-100 hairs each day. Those hairs are all in the attachment part and will come out when you take your extensions out. The longer you leave your extensions in, the more loose hair, the more tangled and harder to comb out it will be.

How do I sleep with them?

You can sleep as normal with your dreads. The first few nights can feel a little different, maybe you feel some tightness but that will go away. To prevent frizz, a (satin) Night Cap is the perfect way to sleep with your Dreads! It will protect your roots from getting frizzy. You could also wear your hair up in a bun.

How and how often do I wash them?

Before washing it is recommended to remove any dread jewelry which can be easily removed, small beads and wrappings you can leave on.

You can wash your scalp or hair once or twice a week with a (natural) residu free Shampoo.

Take a small amount of shampoo in your hands, then gently massage your scalp with the shampoo. Make sure you go all the way down to the tips of the Dreadlocks. It is very important to rinse the dreadlocks with water after shampooing.

And if you want to take a shower without washing your dreads, or only wash your bangs, you can use a shower cap.

After washing

When you have washed your Dreads it is super important they dry thoroughly! After you have squeezed as much water as you can out of your Dreads, wrap a towel on your head for 30 to 60 minutes to soak the rest of the water out. Let them air dry. Make sure your Dreads are dry before you go to sleep or are tied up.

Color longevity

If you take care of your dreads in a sensible and loving way your dreads will last for years.

The colors of wool dreads can fade a bit, especially dark colors can release some small amount using (to) hot water. High quality professional dye is used to hand-dye your wool dreads and is not te be expected to loose much color or “bleeding”.
Using hair care products which includes chemicals can affect the color of wool dreads. I do not recommend to swim in chlorinated water with wool dread extensions (it can have an affect to darker colors).

Synthetic dreads will keep their color when well taken care of.

What to do when my scalp is itching?

When you wear Dread Extensions, your scalp may get itchy sometimes. It can be because the dreads are installed a bit tootight or the scalp and dreads are not dry enough.

The dreads themselves are mostly not the cause of itchiness.

A Refreshening Spray can be a good solution! Just spray this on your scalp and it will calm down.

When you have a rash on your scalp, don’t panic, this will go away after some days, it’s a reaction from your scalp on the tension. Use a Conditioning Oil on the rash to calm down the itchiness. If the rash stays or concerns you, feel free to contact me.

How do I take them out?

Use a seam ripper or scissors to cut the elastics. Then just unbraid Dread by Dread. Comb out the loose hair dry, strand for strand from the bottom to the top of the strand. Or if you prefer wet, wetten the hair, shampoo it, rinse with water, put in some conditioner and brush the hair, beginning at the ends (strand by strand).

Reusable

Dreadlock Extensions are reusable for years! After taking them out you can wash and shampoo them by hand on a low temperature.

Don’t put them in the washing machine or dryer, let them air dry!

It’s important to take good care of your scalp and Dreads.
So here is some useful information for you to know!

Washing

Ideally, it would be best to first wash your new Dreads after a few days. Use a natural, residue free, shampoo.

Take a small amount of shampoo in your hands, then gently massage your scalp with the shampoo. Make sure you go all the way down to the tips of the Dreadlocks. It is very important to rinse the Dreads with water after shampooing.

After the first wash you can wash them once a week or every other week.

Washing your Dreads more than once a week on a regular basis is not necessary. In fact it can disrupt the maturing process.

It is strongly recommended not to sleep with wet dreads!

Itchiness and soreness

It is completely normal to experience some itchiness or even a bit of soreness the first few days. Your new dreadlocks have to settle. If the itchiness and/or soreness consist please contact me, so I can advice you about what the best thing is to do.

Sleeping with Dreadlocks

You can just sleep as normal with your dreads. The first few nights can feel a little different, maybe you feel some tightness but that will go away. To prevent frizz, a (satin) Night Cap is the perfect way to sleep with your dreads! It will protect your roots from getting frizzy. You could also wear your hair up in a bun.

Mature Dreadlocks

Your new baby dreadlocks are going to mature, which can take around 8-12 months. It is normal that the length of the dreads shrink a bit (around 10-20%).

Separate your Dreads

You can help to avoid the dreadlocks growing together by separating them after every wash. Start at the roots and work your way down the entire length of the dreadlock.

Palm roll

I highly recommend to palm roll your dreadlocks to keep them smooth. It will help to reduce loops and bumps. You can palm roll after you have washed your hair, once a week or every other week.

Salty water is magic to your (Salty)Dreads

Swimming in the ocean or dipping your hair in salty water will tighten your dreadlocks even more and is very healthy for the dreads. Just make sure you dry them after swimming, and moisturize them if they get too dry.

*over-use of salty water can dry your dreads out.
