Permanent Dreadlocks

Permanent Dreadlocks

The best thing of getting real dreadlocks is; each dread is different and unique.

It is a commitment, and you can have so many personal reasons to decide to get your hair locked up. If you are ready to take the leap you will learn to love the ongoing change that they will carry. You will see the perfection is in the imperfection and embracing every stage of it, it’s a journey.

Whether you just want one, a few or even a full head of Locs, it is all possible.

Dreadlocks are strands of hair which are being “Locked” up, whereby I use a backcomb and crochet technique.

Getting permanent dreadlocks is something I recommend you take it in careful consideration and do good research before you make the decision. I will be happy to guide you through this process and answer questions when you have them. You can already read into a lot of information on the internet and are welcome to book an intake appointment to talk about your wishes.

Feel free to contact me so if you have any questions or want to book an appointment.

Maturing process, Maintenance & Dread Care

What to expect after getting new dreadlocks;

Maintain your dreads with love and attention

Your are completely free on how, when and how often you want to maintain your permanent dreadlocks but I will share some of my advise with you here.

How often is a maintenance needed?

  • when you like a tidy look, every 2-3 months
  • when you have matured dreads, every 3-4 months
  • when you like a more freeform look, every 6-12 months

Dread Care:

Starting from when you have your “baby” dreads installed;

Washing:

after a new install you can start washing your dreads after a few days.

It is normal your dreads will be a little messy and more loose after washing. This is the time to start palmrolling (read about palmrolling in the next chapter).

After the first wash you can wash your dreads once a week or every other week, or less to personal preference.

Washing your Dreads more than once a week on a regular basis is not necessary. In fact it can disrupt the maturing process.

Shampooing:

use a natural, residu-free shampoo, take a small amount in your hands, then gently massage your scalp with the shampoo. Make sure you go all the way down to the tips of the Dreadlocks. It is very important to rinse the Dreads with water after shampooing.

You can find residu-free natural shampoos in the webshop here.

Drying:

when you have washed your Dreads it is super important they dry thoroughly! After you have squeezed as much water as you can out of your Dreads, wrap a (microfiber) towel on your head for 30 to 60 minutes to soak the rest of the water out. Let them air dry, or use a blowdryer and set it to moderate heat. Make sure your Dreads are dry before you go to sleep or are tied up.

It is strongly recommended not to sleep with wet dreads!

Moisturizing:

the older your dreads become, the more you may find them to become drier, this is why moisturizing them is important. You can use a natural (vegetable) oil, combined with water and essential oils to it or use a (natural) product which is especially made to moisturize dreadlocks.

I strongly recommend NOT use wax in your dreads.

Palm rolling:

the first few months I recommend to palm roll your dreads regularly, at least after every washing, when the dreads are still damp. Palm rolling will speed up the drying proces, will help reduce loops and bumps, stay round shaped, prevent from getting flat and it speeds up the maturing of the locs. Excessive palmrolling can damage your dreads, 1-2 times a week (after washing) is enough.

Separating:

always separate your dreads after every washing to prevent them to grow together.

Maturing:

real dreadlocks have a maturing proces between 8-12 months. During this proces it is completely normal that they change in size and length. During this maturing process you can choose to let them freeform (which will give the bumpy wavy look) or to palm roll them (which will give a more smooth look).
